friend hikes: Point Lobos State Park

July 27, 2017

When people say they love hiking, I sometimes think we are imagining very different things. I think we agree on the heavy-breathing/hands-on-your-hips/sort-of-bent-over satisfaction as we take in fantastic views. I just really dislike the discomfort of always having to ask Jon to push me up the hill. It is embarrassing and I think it isn't good for his wrists.

BUT. That is why I love friend hikes! Because my friends choose hikes where no one gets left behind chugging their klean kanteen! Where everyone brings backpacks full of snacks and we choose loop trails so we don't have to go back up a hill! I really loved the hike we did at Pt. Lobos and was sold the minute my friend said "I see a lot of grandmothers there."

A few details:

  • You can download the map for Pt. Lobos State Park here.
  • You should definitely support state parks, but if you park along the road on Highway 1... where it is free... you can financially support them in other ways.
  • We loved the North Shore Trail because of the incredible coastal bluffs and magical trees. You really can't make a wrong turn because every path leads to unique vantage points.
  • From there, we explored the Cyprus Grove Trail until we got to the South Shore Trail. At that point we freaked out that maybe it wasn't a loop, but then we realized it was and walked through the Mound Meadow Trail (which had the cutest little mushroom patches!) and arrived back at the entrance.
  • Overall, our journey was around 4 miles and if you're looking for the most varied views of Carmel with literally the amount of effort a grandmother gives on a Wednesday morning stroll, this is for you!
