midnight movies: The Del Mar Theater

July 26, 2017

One of the best finds of the summer was midnight Miyazaki movies at the Del Mar! This summer they were showing:

  • Howl's Moving Castle
  • Spirited Away
  • Kiki's Delivery Service
  • Nausicaa- Valley of the Wind
  • Princess Mononoke
  • My Neighbor Totoro
Finding cheap and fun date nights is hard sometimes, so we were so thrilled that the tickets were $6.50! I made Joy the Baker's version of Roy Choi's furikake kettle corn (whoa I know) and packed it into a large tupperware that I smuggled into my large purse. Surprisingly, there was a line when we arrived. The doors opened around 11:50, so when we arrived at 11:20 there were 10 people in front of us. By 11:45, I think there were probably 75 people in line.

Oh! And I was very impressed with the prizes they gave for the free raffle! Even though they declared the winners before the movie started, Jon managed to fall asleep so I have little help remembering exactly what they were.

Finally, the man next to me (not Jon) was snoring for half the movie and despite my shushes, nevertheless he persisted.

A few details:
  • The Del Mar Theater is located at 1124 Pacific Avenue.
  • It is directly across the street from the Cold Stone that was mysteriously still open at midnight. When I inquired, the manager told me that she just stays open until no one else comes in?
  • For information about their events, their FB page is the most helpful!
