When you're craving candied buddha hand: Penny Ice Creamery

August 05, 2017

Okay, it is possible that everything that I have written in this blog up to this point is mere fluff in comparison to the strength of feelings that I have about ice cream. I intend to take this topic incredibly seriously because Jon and I have gone through a lot of analysis and drama and cost/benefit calculations between the three big Santa Cruz ice creameries. Things feel a bit too fresh to hold too tightly onto one because we've been going through some rough times (Mission Hill, we are looking at you and your previously-complimentary-but-now-$0.50 waffle cone). But here we go.

I really do love Penny Ice Creamery. Aside from a 25 cent price increase that we noticed today, (IS THIS A CARTEL said Jon) we are pleased that their waffle cone is delicious and free, their serving sizes are generous, and their flavors are so delightful.

Penny Ice is also the only ice creamery in Santa Cruz that makes small batches in house! Which is wonderful when you get the flavor you want, but sad when they erase the flavor you are ogling while in line.

They have a few locations:
  • Downtown: 913 Cedar St.
  • Pleasure Point: 820 41st Ave.
  • Downtown Kiosk: 1520 K2 Pacific Ave.

Some of our favorite flavors:
  • Dark Chocolate Sorbet
  • Black Tea Peach
  • Cardamom Pistachio
  • Quince Sorbet
  • Straight up Strawberry
  • Candied Buddha Hand
I know most people can do this math on their own, but given that singles are currently $4.25, doubles $6.25, and triples $7.25, it always makes sense to share a double or triple. Really, I shouldn't even have to type this.
